Community Service
Voluntary community service may be a one-time, short-term project or a lengthy, ongoing commitment by a group or an individual. Community service is not compensated monetarily (i.e. money, room, board, etc.) and benefits others. Examples of voluntary community service: tutoring a young student, working on a Habitat for Humanity house, Finucane Service Project, Safe Trick-or-Treat, coaching an athletic team, Scouting ecology badge workshop, participating in a blood drive, AIDS Walk, fundraising to donate to another organization, serving dinner at St. James Soup Kitchen.
Service-Learning
Service-learning is a combination of community service and academic study. Students are assigned a project that addresses community needs. Through this project, they learn from community members and develop leadership skills while practicing the theoretical knowledge gained in class. Service given as part of a service-learning course is recorded on the Service Transcript.
