Biography

Risa Stein, Ph.D., is a clinical pediatric health psychologist. Her post-doctoral fellowship was in the areas of chronic pain. She currently serves on the editorial board for The Journal of Evolution and Health, and frequently reviews grant applications for the National Institutes of Health.

Stein is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in organizational leadership.

Biography

Paul Scott, Ph.D., has been teaching in college classrooms for more than 20 years and was voted Faculty Member of the Year at �鶹�ƽ⴫ý (1998-1999). His commitment to being a college educator is evidenced by dozens of presentations and publications on conceptual change and college teaching. Scott's recent focus is on fostering student ownership of intellectual skills.

Scott has served as psychology department chair, undergraduate curriculum chair and as the Freshman Year Seminar coordinator.

Biography

Katherine Nicolai, Ph.D., joined the Psychology Department in 1995 after completing her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Iowa State University. Dr. Nicolai teaches classroom-based, online, and hybrid courses including Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Behavior, Psychological Assessment, Psychology of Sexual Behavior, and Psychopathy, among other courses. Her primary scholarly interests include correlates of beliefs about mental illness and psychopathy, helping non-scientists understand and think critically about behavioral science research, and the effectiveness of teaching methods, particularly in online and hybrid classrooms.

Biography

Logan B. Kochendorfer, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, Justice, and Society at �鶹�ƽ⴫ý. Dr. Kochendorfer obtained her B.A. from Luther College in 2015, her M.A. from Kent State University in 2018, and her Ph.D. from Kent State University in 2021. She enjoys teaching a variety of courses such as introduction to psychology, developmental psychology, research writing in psychology, and quantitative methods in psychology (behavioral statistics), and looks forward to continuing to expand her repertoire. Dr. Kochendorfer’s research interests focus broadly on how experiences in adolescents’ and emerging adults’ close relationships are linked, and how these close relationship experiences influence various developmental outcomes. She is always happy to include interested undergraduate students in her work and encourages anyone interested in joining her research lab to contact her directly.

Biography

Lauren Hawthorne, Ph.D., is a tenured associate professor of psychology with a specialization in social psychology. She obtained a B.S. from the University of Florida in 2009, a master's in 2011, and a doctorate from the University of Maine in 2017.

Hawthorne's research interests center on the experiences of stigmatized and underrepresented groups such as individuals from low-SES backgrounds or women in male-dominated fields. These experiences may include their self-efficacy, stress and health outcomes for members of stigmatized groups, as well as coping strategies. She is also interested in how intersectional group memberships and ideologies (for example, feminism, the American Dream) may affect their experiences and personal outcomes.
